Welcome!

Kia Ora! Welcome to our new and improved website. We are very excited by our updated look and having a more user friendly site. We are still in the process of building the site, so please bear with us while we get ourselves sorted. Please feel very welcome to email or phone us if you have any queries.

Big thanks to Claudia, George, Adam and the team at Malarky for designing and building our site. We really appreciate your patience and generous support. Thank you!

Thanks also to Deb Radford at AWEA and our members Stephen Blyth and Paul Ketko for helping us through the process of moving into the 21st century.

About us

We passionately believe in a more just world. Our purpose is to support community action and community building through participatory education and research. Our vision is of a future with economic, social and environmental justice in Aotearoa, based on Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Kotare Trust responded to the call for a ‘school for social change’ which came out of an early 1990’s national dialogue of people and sectors working for change – ‘Building Our Own Future’. We were set up to offer Tiriti based social change education and research and have been offering regular programmes since 1999.

The Trust takes its name from the indigenous kingfisher with the sharp eyes and beak, the harsh voice and the brilliant feathers. The Kotare inspires us to get to the roots of injustice and encourage and challenge those working for change through education and community based research.

If you give me a fish you have fed me for a day. If you teach me to fish then you have fed me until the river is contaminated or the shoreline seized for development. But if you teach me to organise then whatever the challenge I can join together with my peers and we will fashion our own solution.
